In 1998 we visited Longwood Gardens—one of the most distinguished arboretums in the United States. While in the large greenhouse, we were enamored by the Bonsai gallery. Since we both were interested in photographing the Bonsai, we decided to make it a joint project—to date our only joint photographic endeavor. From March of 1999 to May of 2001, we made seven trips to Longwood Gardens to make photographs of each speciman at the optimum time in its yearly cycle. We both agreed on the framing and the exposure. Paula made the prints. Each photograph is contact printed from an 8x10-inch negative.
