Most of these photographs come from commissioned projects in the 1980s to photograph four American cities, Toledo, Ohio (1980), New Orleans, (1985), Princeton, New Jersey, (1985), and parts of Pompano Beach and Deerfield Beach in Broward County, Florida (1989). Later, in 2008 Paula and I were commiissioned to photograph Chicago. In all of these commissions I was free to photograph whatever I wanted. I was never required to photograph famous buildings or important city landmarks. I always attempted to get “a sense of the city.” Of course, it would be my sense of the city.
The challenge to balance the allure of the subject matter with my own sense of abstraction is more difficult in the urban landscape than in the natural landscape because the subject matter is so readily recognizable.
Galleries for each of these commissioned projects are forthcoming.
